4 Questions to Ask When Designing Your Pool

If you’re considering a swimming pool for your home, you know that it’s a big investment. Planning and designing your pool is the most important step. As you design your pool, here are four questions you should consider.

Why Do You Want a Pool?

The reason why you want a swimming pool is a core part of its design. A pool intended for simple backyard entertaining will look very different from a pool meant primarily for exercise.

Who Is Going to Use the Pool?

As you plan your pool, keep in mind who will be using it. You might want to include shallow sections if you have young children, or accessible rails if you have elderly family members.

Can Your Yard Properly Accommodate a Swimming Pool?

Not all yards are suitable for a swimming pool. Sandy, rocky, or expansive soil is a concern when constructing a pool. Your soil should be tested to confirm it’s suitable for construction. Building costs will be higher if your site slopes steeply.

Where Will Your Pool Be Located?

When you’re choosing the location of your pool, consider the following factors.

  • The building and zoning laws of your property. Many municipalities require swimming pools to be fenced in, which may influence where you can place your pool. The location of electrical, gas, or water lines also affects where your pool can be placed.
  • The view of your pool from inside your home and the rest of your yard. Choose a pool design that complements your home’s existing landscape and architecture. Add water features or landscape lighting to your pool to make it more attractive when it’s not in use. A beautifully-designed pool can be enjoyed all year long.
  • Sun exposure and wind exposure. Sun exposure will keep the water in your pool warmer. Wind exposure will increase evaporation and will cool down the water.
  • The poolside area. Where will people get into and out of the pool? Where will people relax next to the pool? Where will you store your equipment? These are all important questions to consider when designing your pool.
